Sammy, The Snowshoe Hare
"Sammy, The Snowshoe Hare," is Patricia Pillard McCulley's 2nd children's book. As with all of her books, there is deeper meaning than might appear obvious when just reading the title. Sammy is wonderful story for the the little ones with delightful illustrations by an extremely talented 18 year old illustrator, Allison Giles. Patricia located Allison through the Brentwood High Schools Art Departments and hired her to illustrate Sammy.
An Allegory. Sammy, the Snowshoe Hare and his parents wear people snowshoes. Why? When this question is posed to Sammy he doesn't know the answer. He seeks to find out why from Orin the wise old Owl, but Sammy doesn't understand Orin's answer. Shortly thereafter, an unexpected life experience helps Sammy discover the answer – that he doesn't really need to wear additional snowshoes to be a Snowshoe Hare. Without them, he discovers his heart and his true self as a Snowshoe Hare!
